July 26, 2015.
I had the great pleasure of meeting two musicians I adore: Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, who were here in Israel for a concert. I had the honour of performing for them and hosting a gathering that was organised by the New Israel Fund and many other peace organisations. These beloved musicians, who have paid high prices for their political activity (including jail!) are a great inspiration for me, and the whole meeting was very touching, especially when Caetano dedicated his song "Gente" (People) to me after I said it's one of my favourite words in Portuguese following a sentence that a Palestinian bereaved father said: "People are the most important thing". The two musicians then came up on stage and explained why they came to Israel despite the threats of boycott, and that for them dialogue is important, they came here to meet the people up close, and as part of that they visited the Palestinian village Susia and after seeing what they saw they believe even more that occupation must end.
The meeting ended with a duet I performed with David Broza called "In my heart" in Arabic and Hebrew.
The room was filled with hope and inspiration, thank you Caetano and Gil.
