The Mira Awad Grant

When I was a teenager, I had the passion for music, but my high school did not provide any musical education, nor any encouragement. Both due to lack of budgets and the lack of relevant social frames. I had to pave my way quite alone, despite circumstances.

In 2013 I decided I want to do something to help young people who are in the same situation I used to be in, young people with a talent or a passion, but with no one to stand behind them, and so I established the yearly Mira Awad Grant. and now, I'm the person who stands behind them.

My dream is to give out grants in every Arab school in Israel, but I started at home, the first two Mira Awad Grants were given out June 2013 in my village- Rameh.

The 2013 grant for Creativity was given out to a young man called Razi who's dream is to become a chef. Besides the grant, Razi received a two week one-on-one course with one of Israel's most famous culinary figures, chef Haim Cohen. This made Razi even more determined to go on with his dream.

The 2013 grant for Leadership went to a group of young boys and girls who decided to volunteer their time for renovating and bettering the village's streets and squares. They call themselves "Yalla Nballesh" which means "Let's start" in Arabic. In addition to the grant they received Tshirts with a logo that was designed especially for them. I admire these young people, because we were driven by the same principal "Let's start doing something!", instead of sitting around waiting for things to happen. It drove them to start their activity, and drove me to establish this grant.

The 2014 Grants were handed out on June 20, 2014.

The 2014 grant for creativity was handed to Jonny Shhok and Ahmad Mansour for their hobby of photography, the program arranged for them to join professional photographers on set to learn more about the trade and decide to which direction they want to take their photography.

The 2014 grant for leadership was given to Fadi Salameh, for his volunteer work in "Alshoja'an" foundation for children diabetes. Fadi himself has diabetes and has chosen to help other kids deal with the condition, a courageous and inspirational young man, and I wish him all the best.
